Durante os anos de preparação da invasão da Europa, os aliados estabeleceram de início um desembarque no Sul da França para apoiar o assalto principal na Normandia. Esse plano foi então chamado “Operação Anvil” (“Bigorna”). Contudo, não foi possível desviar os recursos navais para o Mediterrâneo e a Operação Anvil, agora rebatizada “Dragoon”, foi adiada para agosto. A 15/08/1944, a “Operação Dragoon” foi desencadeada. O sucesso foi total, uma vez que muitas forças alemãs haviam sido transferidas para a frente da Normandia, a qual já havia sido rompida. Contudo, era importante que a progressão pelo vale do rio Ródano fosse a mais rápida possível, para fazer contato com as forças aliadas vindas do Noroeste francês e assim cercar o 1º Exército alemão, que então defendia a costa atlântica francesa. Também era necessário cobrir a fronteira italiana, para impedir os alemães de atacar a sua retaguarda vindo daquele país e também ameaçar a posição inimiga no vale do rio Pó. During the years of preparation for the invasion of Europe, the Allies initially planned a landing in southern France to support the main assault in Normandy. This plan was then called “Operation Anvil” (“Anvil”). However, it was not possible to divert naval resources to the Mediterranean and Operation Anvil, now renamed “Dragoon”, was postponed until August. On 15/08/1944, “Operation Dragoon” was launched. It was a complete success, since many German forces had been transferred to the Normandy front, which had already been breached. However, it was important that the advance along the Rhône valley be as fast as possible, in order to make contact with the Allied forces coming from the northwest of France and thus encircle the German 1st Army, which was then defending the French Atlantic coast. It was also necessary to cover the Italian border, to prevent the Germans from attacking their rearguard from that country and also to threaten the enemy position in the Po valley.
