I made all the chit backs to be gray because once you put them all in one stack, it can be disconcerting if they have different back colors. At start, each player's chits are in individual stacks. There is a tiny colored square next to each stack to tell you that stack's color. When you draw your initial chits, put them someplace on your side of the board. They will be face down, so "peek" (a right-click command) to see them without showing them to your opponent. Flip them over to reveal them to all. When you discard one, just stack the discards somewhere out of the way. After both players have drawn their initial chits, right-click on the Italian stack and send that stack to the other one. This will give you one shuffled stack of chits from both sides.
There is a "markers" button on the tool bar that will open a markers window. It has control marker and a general-purpose arrow. (I've already put one on the map.) Use the arrow(s) to point to stuff -- who's attacking, moving, defending, etc. It makes playing easier.
Depending on your Vassal version, you may see grid numbering on the map. If you don't see it, because you are using 3.1.20 or earlier, hover the cursor over a hex to show its hex number.
