After diamonds were found in the inland regions of South Africa, the Boers, Dutch settlers, went to war with Great Britain to defend their land twice. The Boers lost both wars but embarrassed the UK by using guerilla tactics and superior weaponry to fight off a numerically and logistically superior opponent, allowing for a conditional surrender.
