ZOC functionality how to

  • This is intended to help players easily see which stack can project a ZOC (= this stack has at least 3 infantry steps) or only a ZOI (this stack has less than 3 infantry steps)
  • For each stack, it will show a coloured shade on the hex if there is at least 3 infantry steps in the stack
  • It works by using all the right unit counters and strength markers on their right side. See 4.4. By example, if you do not use a strength marker for a full strength unit or if you leave the strength marker for a one step (cadre) unit, it will not work correctly
  • The special case of soviet armor brigades is taken into account. They have 1 infantry step as long as their C strength marker is on map and 0 infantry step once they are flipped on their cadre side and without a strength marker
  • It does not work correctly with extended soviet units unless you use two strength markers instead of one
  • It only shows which stack is able to project a ZOC, not which hex is in a ZOC - this is not possible as it depends on terrain. The player still has to apply all terrain effects from 10.6 to know where a ZOC is effective
  • Moving units or changing steps numbers will not automatically update ZOC view (this would slow Vassal too much). Therefore you have a "ZOC refresh" command which is a ZOC off - ZOC on again to update ZOC view in one click

Historical Background: Following the defeat of the German Kursk Offensive in July of 1943 the Soviets unleashed a series of major offensives to clear the Ukraine. By mid-January of 1944 they had liberated the Ukraine north and east of the Dnepr, crossed the Dnepr bend reaching Kirovograd, captured Kiev and driven deep into the western Ukraine capturing Zhitomitor and Berdishev. The Germans, however, did maintain a hold on the Dnepr near Korsun in an exposed salient 70 miles southwest of Kiev and west of Cherkassy. This salient was a tempting target for the Soviets. In the 2nd week of January, 1944 Stavka ordered the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts to conduct major operations against the base of the salient. The purpose would be to surround and eliminate the two German Corps believed to be in the salient. The above Soviet offensive and the subsequent German counter attack forms the basis for the game’s scenarios.

The new 2.0 version module is a completely new version made from scratch. The 1.4 was a out growth of a play test module. There is NO compatibility between the two modules. Saved games from 1.4 will NOT work with 2.0. Players will see greater counter functionality in the new version and higher quality graphics. There is no reason to download the old 1.4 version except to play a game file created with it.

The 3.0 version is built upon version 2.0 with more and updated setups and added functionnalities (see changelog above). Saved games from prior versions will not work with this version 3.0.
